Whales

Since 1996, Dr Alastair Birtles (James Cook University) and Dr Peter Arnold (Museum of Tropical Queensland), assisted by Undersea Explorer, have been studying the biology and behaviour of these whales. At the same time, the dynamics of the interactions between the whales and dive tourists have been studied to develop a framework for managing these interactions in an ecologically sustainable manner.

The Dolphin Discovery Centre is a non-profit organisation committed to dolphin research, education, conservation and tourism.  The Centre was opened in 1994, and is the first Centre in Australia dedicated entirely to dolphin research.
The award-winning vessel has won 10 Fraser Coast South Burnett Tourism Awards for Excellence, has been awarded Advanced Eco Tourism Accreditation and been entered into the Fraser Coast Hall of Fame for its achievements in the whale watching industry.

The ICRI International Year of the Reef 2008 is a worldwide campaign to raise awareness about the value and importance of coral reefs and threats to their sustainability, and to motivate people to take action to protect them. All individuals, corporations, schools, governments, and organizations are welcome and actively encouraged to participate in IYOR 2008
The Australian Coral Reef Society (ACRS) plays a key role by promoting scientific research on Australian coral reefs. It is a forum for discussion and information transfer among scientists, management agencies and reef-based industries that are committed to ecological sustainability.

Reef Check Australia is part of an international non-profit organisation involving the community in monitoring coral reef health. Coral reefs around the world are under enormous pressure from human activities and climate change. Although Australia's reefs are among the best managed in the world, they are not immune to these threats.
The ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies will be a partnership of James Cook University (JCU), the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS), The Australian National University (ANU), the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (GBRMPA) and The University of Queensland (UQ).
